With recent pathway and facility upgrades, Muir Woods is in the forefront in providing improved accessibility in National Parks. The park's advancements are further recognized for their innovative focus on conservation. Major developments, funded by concession fees and administered in a public/private partnership of the National Park Service and ARAMARK, include an accessible pathway to the administration and concession building, and the addition to a new, modern, accessible restroom facility in the "Woods". Accessibility standards are met through use of gradual slopes, handrails and well-placed landings. Visitors will now find it easy to visit the concession and access the restrooms. The boardwalk is built from recycled redwood from a 1930's Eureka planning mill. The conversion included the removal of 8000 square feet of damaging asphalt and the elimination of the old restroom. The path also features curbing, which has proven to be more effective than traditional fencing in keeping people on the trail while allowing them to experience Muir Woods. Future plans for improvement through the joint efforts of the National Park Service and Aramark include providing boardwalk access from the Arch, in addition to upgrading the boardwalk to include benches, water fountains, and a deck with an educational area. The project architect was John Howland, and the contractor was Matrix Construction.
